Old icons never die, they just get re-purposed. McCluhan was right In this respect, that each new medium re-purposes the content of the media it seeks to re-place. Image music text re-formatted and re-presented, layer upon layer of transformations such that we think The Odyssey was a book rather than a storyteller's narrative and that War and Peace is a film.

The century is also noted for the new histories which previously could never find real documentary record in the narrative of the word. Histories narratives of music and sport which have remained intact as events. The exotic voices and dances of the dead return for research and comparative analysis.
