The indexability of web pages, echoes the ninetenth century encyclopedie in its all encompassing aspiration. With hindsight it seems obvious that tools like Google which index the web, should become the most important tools for information retrieval.

These indexing tools base their search on key words and can just as easily retrieve picture images based on key words. Pattern recognition, currently used in filtering content, can clearly make additional contributions based on form and colour. Paper ideas like Manovitch's "Database as a new genre of media " make the web's image content the potential source for constructive ideas.

We already have the indexing and virtual reference tools, and the .jpeg as the nominal image format. Future virtual presentations could run self referentially off the world's servers. Already we see with text .html pages that the medium finds a new audience which follows the latent links of virtual pages. These keyword matches, selected as frequently by serendipidity as key word match, can offer an equally rich thesaurus of images, for example the particular algorithms ( formulae used in a computer programme) which can potentially match any face or cross reference every included painting with a Resurrection.
