The Age of Chemistry, which led science to synthetic dyes for cloth and photosensitive emulsions faces closure due to a lack of interest. Silver chemistry for example no longer has a role in astronomy, this cutting edge science has, at least since the renaissance, sought mechanical assistance; from the camera obscura for eclipse viewing and the daguerrotype for photographing the moon. The night sky archive, recorded photographically on 12 x 16 inch glass plates, remains the apogee of the contribution of silver photography to astronomy but today the practice is considered archaic, today noiseless synthetic colours are adjusted and amplified from a digital source.
