What would Benjamin make of the entire loss of patina in the new digital illuminated script? To consider the monitor screen as having surface patina is to mock the object fetishism of the art historian.
For me photographs always had patina, early I discovered a collection of Julia M Cameron's fixer bespattered and foxed albumen prints in the public library. The archivist's environmental controls did their best to retard the relentless oxidation. of the metallic silver. But the evidence of the beautiful silvery blue and copper-brown areas in the print gave these works an air of melancholy and decay. These works in silver were doomed to oxidation, unless deep frozen as if made ready for space.
