James Agee could have made a field trip to this coffee blender's shop, source of another luxury item, freshly roasted beans.
But the place is a bundle of fascinating roasters and grinders. I said to the blender, "I want to photograph your crucifix, I like the way it's nested among the Fire, Health and Safety notices"
"Hmm I've never seen it like that before" he said
Now I've been buying coffee from this blender for twenty years, and I know he has worked daily in this same room since he was fourteen. He retired this year age 65, but still likes to keep his hand in on odd days of the week, and in all that time how had he seen the crucifix? In a way I never could, for me it is a christian totem of sadness, incongruously positioned (fracture), for the blender it is a focus for his belief.
